1946年スコットランドのグラスゴー生まれ。60年代半ばからフォーク・クラブなどで活動。65年フォーク系シンガー・ソングライターとして「キャッチ・ザ・ウィンド」でデビュー。65年アメリカ進出で飛躍のきっかけをつかみ、66年レコード会社移籍から人気急上昇。時代を反映してか、アクの強い、ロックよりの演奏とのどにかかった歌声で米国の素朴なフォークとは異なる作品で注目される。代表作「サンシャイン・スーパーマン」「メロー・イエロー」など。
